Post Graduate and Third Cycle
Post graduate or third cycle in the arts is the phase that follows after completing a bachelor and a master in higher art education. It concerns a phase of relevant and deepening research, with a strong connection to practice. These trajectories are a collaboration between university and higher education institutions.
Creator Doctus
Creator Doctus (CrD) is a project developed at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie that seeks to realise a new European third cycle award for higher arts education. The new award runs parallel to the existing Doctor of Philosophy (PhD), valorising the output of artists as high-quality research that results in the creation of new insight at the forefront of art practice. The three-year research trajectory does not lead to a written dissertation, but to a collection of artistic works or projects. These provide answers to research questions formulated by the artist on the basis of a research area marked by a social partner.

The Gerrit Rietveld Academie has successfully completed two CrD trajectories. On September 28th 2020, Yael Davids defence of her research 'A Daily Practice' was assessed positively, and she was the first artist to be granted the title of Creator Doctus. On 14 November 2024, Femke Herregraven's defence of her research project 'The Evacuated' was assessed positively and she was the second artist to be granted the CrD title.
The third iteration of the CrD will sit within the framework of the Professional Doctorate (PD). The PD is initiated by the Association of Universities of Applied Sciences in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science. Several universities of applied sciences are participating. PD is the equivalent of the PhD for the Dutch Universities of the Applied Sciences. The difference is that a PhD programme at a university trains a professional researcher, while the PD programme at the Universities of Applied Sciences trains an investigative professional.
