Thesis: I feel so Uprooted
Loren explores the conceptual potential of materials such as indigo, leather and clayslip from geographically important places, in Growing up under the Wings of a Displaced Body. She touches upon topics deeply rooted in personal history and cultural context with the use of these materials. By doing so, they attempt to comment on generational trauma seeping through the Turkish diaspora in The Netherlands.
Loren’s grandfather migrated as a guestworker in the 60’s to The Netherlands, his first job was in a brick factory along the river of the Waal.
Several works are presented lingering around the same question: Does displacement for wealth pay off? With a focus on safety, protection and labour she zooms in on various experiences or rather consequences of these marginalized communities. The answers echo through the works as the chosen materials speak an universal language. Like in Promises of protection, the quilted technique used to create a blanket-like wallpiece made of leather, shows a tension between the language of the material and the technique used to create it.
