Stability at Stake by Finn Overdevest
This installation uses oversized ceramic tent stakes to
symbolize the Gerrit Rietveld Academie as a temporary,
yet meaningful space: like a tent, ready to be packed up as
I move on. Each stake, glazed in collaboration, holds drawings,
memories, and statements contributed by students, staff,
and myself. Their playful presence contrasts with the rigid
architecture, emphasizing that the true foundation of the
institution lies in its people and shared experiences.
In Collaboration with:
The Ceramic department (Ditte Bollerup, Reyhoon Jahani, Mia Kokine Joensen, Katinka Olrik, Dijntje Bijvank, Freja Ostergaard, Mozes Bedaux, Isabelle Bergmann, Gertrud Hallum, Hanna IJsselstein Mulder, Klaudia Kazmierczak, Olivia Kim, Stefania-Rada Morariu, Anii Park, Marja Kennis, Benedetta Pompili, Jonas Vansteenkiste, Eylem Aladogan)
The Library (Jip van Steenis, Erlynn Pasanea, Matthew Oxley)
The BookBinding workshop (Miquel Hervas Gomez, Ott Metusala, Gersande Schellinx)
Rietveld Alumni (Dasha Leo, Eve Boontje, Bjørg Nielsen, César Rogers)

wood fired wood
by Finn Overdevest
Clay logs, fired for six days in a wood-fired (Anagama) kiln, were
shaped by the flames that made them ceramics. Ash settled onto
the surface, melting into a natural glaze; wood makes the clay look
like wood again. Displayed on a structure based on the conveyor
belt used to carry firewood to the kiln, the ceramics reflect the
process, labor and paradox behind the work.
Special thanks to Tørbjørn Kvasbø and everyone on the wood
firing team.
