“A chair is still a chair
Even when there's no one sitting there
But a chair is not a house and a house is not a home

A room is a still a room
Even when there's nothin' there but gloom
But a room is not a house and a house is not a home"

With these lyrics from “A House Is Not A Home,” Luther Vandross speaks to a meaning of home that is based more upon notions of romance, separation, and lost love than a physical structure or piece of architecture.

Home is built upon relationships, memory, warmth, emotion. Our presence gives an inanimate setting life and vibrance. Once this relationship has ended, home is no longer home. It becomes a cold space devoid of love, warmth, or human touch. The house, conversely, is a space of potential. It is a framework for a home to come into being. It becomes infused with meaning and value.

How does house become home? How does home become house?

With "A House is Not, a Home is Not, a House, a Home…," first and second year students from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie's Architectural Design department reflect on, represent, and redesign the fluid, shifting, dynamic, and intimate relations between house and home. The installation houses a series of diverse material works that articulate an understanding of a collective home.

“A House is Not, A Home is Not, a House, a Home…” is an exhibition at Dutch Design Week (@dutchdesignweek) of first and second year students from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie's Architectural Design department (@architecture.rietveld), within the context of the group exhibition Class of 21. The exhibition is open from October 16-24 at the Klokgebouw in Eindhoven.
