I WANT TO BE A CAT
OR A LITTLE TIGER
I'LL STARE AT YOU FROM MY PILLOW
ONE SULFURIC STINKY EYE

I WANT TO BE AT THE PIER
I'LL HAVE A DIPLOMA FOR LUNCH
I WANT TO BE SEVEN STORIES DOWN
I'M NOT YOUR BASEMENT TIGER
& YOU'RE NOT MY PERSONNEL

Joost van Summeren shows a series of silk screen printed and painted images on paper and textual fragments. The imagery is highly abstract.

In creating these works, the artist tried to reach a state of direct sensory perception: beyond rational analysis; all forms of judgment; and the ego. This can be disorienting, yet also bring a heightened sense of lucidity. The brush ‒ or pen ‒ writes a statement about the maker at that moment in time. As such, the works become personally and politically emancipating, as the making process peels away and makes visible the layers of preconceptions and (assumed) expectations. Down to the core, which is a void.
