The White Shirt Project
With Lindsey Fontijn, Madelief Geus, Sara Leme, Lisa Plaut and Yunting Zhang
29 March - 21 May 2017, open 24/7
Sint Nicolaasstraat, Amsterdam
The second year students of the Jewellery Department have individually worked around and with the white shirt. The starting point of this project was a folded shirt and a text about this iconic garment written by art historian Sophie Berrebi in which she unravels the history and references of the white shirt. One of the most basic pieces of our wardrobe played a role in gender, labour and class issues, and "may well cary, in a subliminal way, an invitation to act in the era of dematerialized labour”. In this presentation, the students show their work as well as their research and sources of inspiration whereby they approach jewellery design as an independent art form at the interface between applied art and fine arts.
