In Electra’s tragedy van Zadelhoff places the ancient Greek character Electra in a contemporary setting and portrays her struggles as a millennial. The young woman mourns the death of her father, who was murdered by his spouse, Electra’s mother. In the film Electra’s search for companionship results into meetings in an anonymous online chat room, a space that matches her volatile attitude.
Through the inbuilt webcam, with its native grain, we get an insight in the actor’s bedroom. Off and on we see images from Electra’s point-of-view. One moment she’s watching the movie Electra (dir. Michael Cacoyannis, 1962). The other moment she’s watching her mother, Clytemnestra, who is downstairs guarding and patrolling the property.
