The Gerrit Rietveld Academie is a small-scale, independent and internationally oriented university for fine art and design in Amsterdam (NL). A wide range of artistic expertise converges at the academy.
The Rietveld Academie offers a four-year bachelor’s degree programme that starts with a general formative year, the Basicyear, after which students can make an informed choice from twelve different specialisations, the departments. All the departments at the academy question their own disciplines and share an experimental approach to education.
The Rietveld Academie also offers a five-year part-time bachelor’s degree programme called DOGtime. The propaedeutic phase of the part-time bachelor's programme takes two years to complete and is followed by three years of in-depth study.
The bachelor's programme is accredited by the NVAO.
Over half our students come from outside the Netherlands. English is the language of communication at the academy.
Graduates may use the title of Bachelor of Arts in Art and Design (BA).
Once students have gained the Bachelor's degree (BA in Art & Design), they can go on to take a Master's degree, for example at the Sandberg Instituut, also part of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.
We run two preliminary programmes at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. These include the Orientation Course, in which participants spend 25 Saturday afternoons taking classes at the academy. It enables participants to build up a portfolio and decide whether an art academy is right for them. Besides this, we provide a Preparatory Course that offers classes for three or four half-day sessions per week. On successful completion of the Preparatory Course, participants can transfer to the Basicyear.
