RietveldTV is Gerrit Rietveld Academie’s monthly TV show. Hosted every last Saturday and Sunday at 10.40pm by AT5 and afterwards forever online on Vimeo. Every month an alum is invited to use the set audiovisual 12 minutes as a framework for the development of a new work. RietveldTV provides a platform for alums to highlight their views on art, culture and the world. The broadcasts are facilitated by the academy, and created in complete artistic freedom.

Approximately 10 seasons of RietveldTV

RietveldTV started as a project by Gijs Muller as part of the Library, to turn the library into a multimediaLAB. He invited Kuno Terwindt as RietveldTV’s first editor in chief. Kuno discovered hidden gems in the archive that was mainly built up by the VAV - moving image department. He turned these gems into a TV show for the world to see.

In 2011 Rogier Roeters became editor in chief. He changed the concept of RietveldTV and made portraits of students and alums, to show the diversity of what happens during and after a studies at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie.

Since September 2014 Marieke Coppens is RietveldTV’s creative director. Within her concept, showing the diversity of what could happen after the Gerrit Rietveld Academie is still an important selection motive. She now invites an alum to use the audiovisual 12 minutes as a framework for the development of a new work, by being RietveldTV’s editor in chief for once in a lifetime.

Season 2024/2025

We are thrilled to announce the brand-new season of RietveldTV, curated by the fresh curatorial team of the academic year 24/25: Saskia den Hartigh (DOGtime), Bjarke Fuglsbjerg (VAV), Lefteris Katsarakis (VAV), Sara Darle Olsson (Architectural Design).

RatveldTV: Two Truths and a Lie, explores the tension between fact and fiction. The project delves into how reality can be subtly constructed, questioning where truth ends and storytelling begins. It examines how the lens of a camera and editing the footage manipulate, stage, recontextualize and reemphasize the truth, creating a blend of authenticity and artifice. The “rat” in the title sneaks in as a playful symbol—an infiltrator hinting at hidden truths exposing what’s often overlooked. RatveldTV reflects on the artifice of media, unpacks the “real” in ways that reveal the seams of constructed reality, spotlighting the delicate balance between what’s in view and what remains hidden, and inviting contemplation on the slippery, shifting nature of truth. Ultimately, it questions how we construct and edit reality, both in life and in film, and challenges the viewer to reconsider what is “real.”

I think there is a little magic in the fact that I'm so totally real but look so artificial at the same time.
