1st year graphic design workshop, April 2018: 'Wat men weet [That We Know]'. Over the week of 16-20 April 2018 the 1st year students of the graphic design department worked with artist Hinrich Sachs and a collection of 45 international editions—sourced by students, teachers, parents and friends of the department—of the March 2018 issue of ELLE magazine. Their workshop lead up to a public discussion at Amsterdam bookstore San Serriffe, with expert guests from different backgrounds, and a public presentation the next day revealing more specifically the students findings. The speakers at the public event were Joke Robaard, Jesse van Oosten, Linda van Deursen, and Hinrich Sachs.
'Wat men weet [That We Know]' promises a debate about the dynamics of globalization, focussing on both photography and typography as signifiers of cultural climate, as well as on the dissemination and appropriation of visual codes as social codes, based on the global range of ELLE magazine editions present. And what about the influencers and the migrant laborers in the business? Originally conceived and initiated by artist Hinrich Sachs in 1994, 'That We Know' adapts to the cultural context of each edition, thus launching and challenging the local critical perception of the global commodity ELLE, each time anew.
