Admission for the Preparatory Course 2021-2022 closed after we completed our May and June admission rounds.

Application for the the Preparatory Coruse 2022-2023 starts in November, when the link to the application form will become available here again.

Proof of English proficiency

Non-EU/EEA applicants who are not native speakers (of English) have to submit an Academic IELTS certificate with minimum overall band score of 6.0, with at least 6.0 with the application form. NOTE: Applications submitted without this proof of English proficiency, will not be considered! For native speakers, a copy of your high school diploma is considered sufficient proof of English proficiency. If you are a native speaker and currently in your graduation year of high school, you can submit your high school diploma as soon as you obtain it.

EU/EEA applicants can submit a European high school diploma with English as exam subject as proof of English proficiency, and European candidates who are in their graduation year in high school, can submit their high school diploma as soon as they obtain it (but before the start of the course).

Submitting portfolio (instead of admission interview)

Normally, the Preparatory Course is preceded by an admission interview with two tutors during which you present a selection of your visual work, and the outcome of home assignments. For the 2021-2022 admission round however, candidates are asked to fill out a questionnaire online and submit a selection of works online for assessment. The selection of work you show may consist of sketches, doodles, photographs, videos or three-dimensional work – in short, visual information in order to see if you are going to benefit from our programme, anything that provides information on your visual capacities. We would also like to know about your views on studying with us.

Start of the course

The Preparatory Course 2021 starts with an informal meet & greet on Wednesday 29 September 2021. The first class is on Friday 1 October 2021.

Course fee

The 2021-2022 course fee is € 2,088.- (the fee for 2022-2023 has not been determined yet).

NOTE: the course fee has to be paid in full before the start of the course, and cannot be paid in instalments. Additionally, attending the Preparatory Course does not give you the right to apply for Dutch student support (Studiefinanciering).

Residence permit non-EU/EEA students

Students from all non-EU/EEA countries are OBLIGED to apply for a residence permit through the International Office of the Gerrit Rietveld Academie to study in our Preparatory Course.

Did you know that non-EU/EEA students accepted for the Prep Course of 2019-2020 had to have almost €13,000 on their bank account to apply for their residence permit? For more information, read here.
