Please note: the Lectoraat of Art & Public Space (LAPS) has been discontinued since November 2022. LAPS has since changed to LASP: Art & Spatial Praxis.

The Lectoraat Art & Public Space (LAPS) fulfils three roles within the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and in the field of art and public space.

1) LAPS carries out research on the functioning of art in the public space and the way in which art is made public. LAPS organises the research group called the ‘kenniskring’, which initiates, coordinates and discusses research by teachers and external experts on art and public space. Furthermore, in the research programme ‘Making Things Public’ a select group of researchers conduct their PhD research under the guidance of dr. Paula Albuquerque.

2) LAPS focuses on the expansion and reinforcement of the research structure within the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and Sandberg Instituut. The objective of LAPS is to form a bridge between research practice and education.

3) LAPS contributes to the development, disclosure and presentation of knowledge on art and public space. LAPS works for external commissioners, varying from public authorities to organisations and freelancers. LAPS also initiates its own research and distributes the results through symposia, lectures, debates, publications and exhibitions. Furthermore, LAPS manages the website Digital Helpdesk Art & Public Space and makes it accessible for the public.
