In collaboration with the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam, the Gerrit Rietveld Academie presents: Technodiversity - Beyond Datafication and Digital Colonialism. This is a large-scale, multi-day event in the museum building and a festive Friday Night. From 20 to 24 March 2024, questions about technodiversity and rethinking how we deal with data take centre stage.
The annual collaboration between the Stedelijk Museum and the Gerrit Rietveld Academy consists of two parts: a conference, and an exhibition with performance programme.
Studium Generale is a comprehensive theoretical programme at the Rietveld Academie. The Stedelijk Museum will host a two-day conference where guest curators will each fill a day with diverse artistic perspectives on the theme Technodiversity - Beyond Datafication and Digital Colonialism.
Following Studium Generale's theme, students will create new work for the exhibition Rietveld Uncut. These student projects and the outcomes of a workshop by Mariana Fernández Mora bring together 'thinking and making on this theme. The exhibition will be complemented and activated on Friday Night 22 March with a special programme of performances, interventions and a performative lecture by Taka Taka.
TECHNODIVERSITY - BEYOND DATAFICATION AND DIGITAL COLONIALISM
This year's focus is on technodiversity and our dealings with data. Technodiversity recognizes that technologies come from different places and perspectives – they're shaped by various knowledge systems, political beliefs, economic factors, and cultural practices. We're challenging the idea that our data should be mined for profit. We want to rethink how we relate to data, moving away from the idea that it's just a commodity to be exploited. By exploring the connections between our bodies, identities, digital tools, artistic expression, and activism, we're imagining a new kind of relationship with data – one that's grounded in our lived experiences and has the potential to challenge the status quo.

The two-day conference is a collaboration of Studium Generale with guest curators Karen Archey (20 March) and Zach Blas (21 March). It will feature presentations, talks, screenings and performances by artists, writers, activists and theorists including: Ramon Amaro, Lila Lee-Morrison, Natasha Tontey, Kate Cooper, Shu Lea Cheang, Ricardo Dominguez, Isadora Neves Marques, Shaka McGlotten, and Nelly Y. Pinkrah.
