Clémence Lollia Hilaire - 'Big chop - Hair-raising stories on Colonial Ghosts and Floating Identities'

Clémence Lollia Hilaire’s text is a non linear path through some moments of afro diasporic history and expression. Its common thread is some kind of study of an online community of young women self titled ’Naturals’. In my text their hair care journey becomes a metonymic display for identities and their complexities. The examples I use jump from many places and times and aim to discuss and challenge the limits of a black essence. It’s an attempt to celebrate and find home in moments of ontological slippage and blurriness.
