Thesis: (with my ears) to my feet's heels

Dennis Buckland is a visual artist born in Cape Town and lives and works between Amsterdam and South Africa. They make videos, drawings and installations, which are often combined with or activated by performance.

For their graduation Buckland showed a series of video essays titled, that which the wind intends, exploring events from the filmmakers childhood on a holiday farm in the Bokkeveld mountains - a place which, for many, is ahistorical. The investigation is informed by fragments history from a different landscape, |xam-ka !au, which is brought to life by an archive of stories told by |xam people who were living there in the 1860’s.

During their studies at the academy they showed work at the Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam for Rietveld Uncut and at the Kunst im Tunnel Museum, Düsseldorf for the exhibition, Down the Rabbit Hole, both in collaboration with Aljoscha Lahner.  Their thesis, (with my ears) to my feet’s heels, was given an honorary mention in Rietveld Review(ed) 2023.
