Thesis: I‘m afraid of death

I'm Afraid of death

Everything that lives has to die

I`m afraid of death. Of its insurmountability and absurdity. Of how everybody who is alive now is going to be dead at some point. I long to leave traces, to immortalize myself. A trace is left behind when somebody is gone, a trace, something that is strong enough to outlive us. Through craftsmanship, I work against my own death.

A mausoleum functions both as a grave and as memorial. It is the meeting point between brutal reality and simultaneously offers hope and gives space for everything that is beyond the rational. The mausoleum hosts the nostalgia and phantom pain of every individual that can’t bear our finite nature.

In a mausoleum, just like in childhood, reality and fantasy live close together. Through evoking this fantasy, I create a distance between me and death.

Death raises all the questions of life, and yet it is the opposit.
