See you again for the first time, next time - Collaging Beirut
Room 014
“Cities, like dreams, are made of desires and fears, even if the thread of their discourse is secret, their rules are absurd, their perspectives deceitful, and everything conceals something else.”*
If we look at a city like a giant collage, every new encounter and impression is a piece that can be added to the image. One of the most interesting collages to me is Beirut with its rich history, vibrant neighbourhoods and millions of stories to tell. The city is located in the Middle East, a region that a lot of people here know from the news and from media representations. Often these images are connected to violence and war and rarely include other perspectives; after the explosions on the 4th of August even more so.
The installation invites people to discover an imaginary city made out of objects and sculptures consisting of different pieces that can be taken apart and put together in a new way. It’s an ode to Beirut whose beauty lies in the hidden layers, the ones that can’t be seen from afar. As visitors move through the installation, they can discover details and see it from different perspectives, personal views get added to the picture and the first impression changes.
