PEACE
Design by Tomáš Hlava
2 March 2022
We are deeply unsettled by the outbreak of war in Ukraine. The Russian army sheds destruction and fear in the region by firing missiles and forcibly moving troops across Ukrainian borders to occupy the country. We sincerely hope that peace may be established again soon.
We stand in solidarity with the Ukrainian people and with the thousands of Russian protesters who are currently being detained.
We are in contact with a limited number of students, staff and alumni who we know are directly affected. We also want to use this message to indicate that we are there to support those who need it.
Students with personal questions or problems are asked to contact Mirjam Mazurel, the student counsellor (mirjam.mazurel[at]rietveldacademie.nl).
Applicants can contact apply[at]rietveldacademie.nl to discuss the admission procedure and how to apply.
Staff members can contact the head of their department or the personnel department (personeelszaken[at]rietveldacademie.nl).
We also want to ask everyone to look around you to see where and in what way you can give help. We will pay further attention to this in the coming period. We also trust that everyone will continue to treat each other with respect, both students and employees, regardless of their origin.

The Gerrit Rietveld Academie flying the flag of Ukraine in solidarity
On Tuesday 1 and Wednesday 2 March, students and alumni of the Rietveld Academie organised a Support for Ukraine // flea market in room Fedlev 101. The flea market started at 12.00 hrs and continued until 20.00 hrs. Students sold clothes, other second hand goods, and more.
There was also a collection point for physical things such as flashlights, raincoats and sleeping bags. These donated items have left for the Ukrainian border. From there, things will be sorted according to needs and spread across the country.
A second flea market was organised on 6 April 2022
To end the exhibition Rietveld Uncut in a festive way, the Rietveld Uncut Afterparty was organised on Saturday Night 26 March in Club Atelier. The party's ticket sale is donated to Ukrainians.nl and Sphere/KharkivPride
We would like to draw attention to this project Olga Permiakova (photography alumnus) that was exhibited in 2019 in exhibition space Eight Cubic Meters.
About Capri Blue / Traffic Yellow
"A sense of belonging to a particular state, an attachment to its national identity, national idea and national symbols are never stronger than when countries are in conflict with each other. After the Ukrainian revolution of 2014 followed by the occupation of the eastern part of Ukraine by Russia patriotic fervour started to grow. People in Kyiv and other cities painted certain objects of the cityscape in colours of the Ukrainian flag, thereby emphasising national identity. Capri Blue / Traffic Yellow are the actual colours of the flag of Ukraine according to the RAL colour matching system."
