Artist statement, Jan Cornelissen.
Graduating from Rietveld, my thesis dealt with Resonance, Noise, and Dissonance. First of all with Resonance, which I defined as the echo out of an inner image-atlas. Echo-images that are part of your visual memory, which can be digged up and interact with the actual work of art you are confronted with. I also touched upon the increasing important role of language (titles, poems, text), that may constitute an essential component of energy to dig into your visual memory, alongside the visual encounter. During my years at DOGtime/expanded-painting I developed work with the aim is to stir the spectator, allowing to dive into his very personal image-atlas without a predefined message. My work deals with understanding and questioning the complexity of human behavior, biological issues as the origin of life, and medical issues I dealt with during my professional life as a medical doctor. Currently I’m involved in making reliefs using a number of materials, including home-made linoleum, wood, stucco, oilpaint, glue, and jute. Color and light/shadow nuances are essential in these “expanded-painting” reliefs. My work does not arise from a predefined print or plan, but more or less spontaneously arises out of a pool (layer) close to what is being explored in the process of Resonance.
