Thesis: The Metamodern Donkey’s Endless Chase
Invisible Peacock
How does someone understand their own time? Spread across horizontal axes, we are tied to coordinates by satellites watching above us, but who stands above time? In Greek Mythology, nothing escaped the view of Argus the All-Seeing, who never rested and was never absent from his time. But lured to sleep, he was taken out of the present; while lying unconscious, did he dream he was standing above time, finally seeing what always escaped him? Like Argus, Modernism thought it saw time beneath it, even as it unfolded always on the verge of being the future. Now that it has awoken, Modernism doesn’t remember what it dreamt, or what it saw of the structure of the present, but it can’t shake the feeling that someone is still watching.
