The Gerrit Rietveld Academie's Bachelor's programme in Fine Arts and Design is accredited by the Nederlands-Vlaamse Accreditatieorganisatie (NVAO). This means that students receive a recognised Bachelor's degree at the end of the course, they can apply for study financing and their studies are largely funded by the government.

Every six years, a re-accreditation takes place to examine whether the programme still meets the quality requirements. An independent panel, consisting of members who have knowledge of the field and of education, visits the academy for this purpose. They talk to various sections of the academy about, among other things, the objective of the study programme, the design of the education, the lecturers, the facilities, the quality policy, testing and assessment, and the learning results achieved. Before visiting, the panel reads the self-evaluation written by the programme. The panel also examines whether the special attribute Small-scale Intensive Education qualifies for awarding.

Based on the positive panel report, the NVAO decided on 15 June 2020 to re-accredit the programme and to extend the special quality mark of Small-scale Intensive Education.

Development interview

Within a year of the NVAO's decision, the programme must hold a so-called development interview with (a delegation of) the panel. Due to the corona pandemic, this meeting took place on 2 November 2021. During this development interview the academy looks ahead; the questions they present are related to the future of the academy. The Rietveld Academie has chosen to discuss a consideration in the panel report concerning engaged autonomy. The report of this conversation can be found here
