Thesis: Weaving bridges: Understanding the self, family, and tradition through textile art

This installation consists of a series of works made through a process of sewing and painting on unprimed canvas. Starting from the idea that crafting encloses a realm of abstract knowledge to be discovered, I delve into the literacy of textile crafts in particular. Drawing inspiration from the hand-stitching and sewing performed by the women in my family, I mimic their gestures to inform my own physical experience. The materiality and concreteness of the works—through the use of threads, textiles, and paint—forms a parallel to understand the physicality of communication and knowledge exchange. In this terrain, the tension is unavoidable, reflecting the tensions between achieving connection and maintaining autonomy when interacting and relating to others. Sometimes the strains are pulled too hard creating uneasiness, translating here into all those folds and twists and turns. Sometimes, there is clarity and transparency. Other times there is unforced connection and pure understanding. In this series, I invite viewers to explore a world where crafting fosters relational becoming, bridging physical existence and intellectual understanding.
