Acoustic Memories of Berlin

After our class trip to Berlin, Caroline Schmid and I gathered acoustic memories from the city and captured them visually. This project is connected to our 'Sound Publishing' project, which we had the opportunity to present in Berlin.

Bibliography

For the theory class held by Zachary Formwalt,  the goal was to create a bibliography by the end of the semester that includes contributions that interested or inspired us during our studies and/or are related to our project. In doing so, we were to develop our own system for structuring the content, with the basic idea of being able to continue using it in the future. For this assessment, I designed a website that I continuously update.

GD-Archive

This project was created in collaboration with Yassi Rafizadeh, Koza Otmar, and Parsa Adibi with the mentoring of Werker Collective. We created a website that showcases both older and current works of students from the Graphic Design department at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. We noticed that the students' works are difficult to access on the internet. We wanted to change this with our GD-Archive. The goal of this website is for it to be continuously managed and updated by the students themselves, in order to make visible and accessible what is being created in this department.

Type design

Mentored by Sam de Groot, we had two type design projects during the 4th semester – I was able to learn a lot about the possibilities and implementation of a typeface and also explore more abstract approaches.

The 'Tile-Type' was created in collaboration with Einar Zotterman, the 'Mollistica' typeface was made together with Yassi Rafizadeh.

Archiving Ugly Chic

For the Archiving project, mentored by Jungmyung Lee, I created an archive on Ugly Chic with visual material from 1927 to today. The publication also includes texts on more specific topics, which I gathered and wrote during my research.

Exploring the Visual Rhythms: A research on VJing and Audiovisual Art History

The topic for this assessment, mentored by Tomáš Celizna, was „Expertise“.

For this project, I contacted various audiovisual artists and VJs and conducted interviews about their work. This resulted in an interactive PDF with videos from the mentioned artists, which I presented in an installation with overlapping projections – with the aim of creating an audiovisual experience while reading my research.

Final thoughts

The exchange at the Gerrit Rietveld Academy has definitely expanded my understanding of what can be considered graphic design. It also taught me new approaches to a project. I was able to learn a lot about myself and my creative process, as the schedule is very different from that of my home school. I am very grateful that I was able to have this enriching experience.
