I Make Things With My Hands
The work I Make Things With My Handsis an exploration of the hands. I started with literature research and reflections on myself by examining my own hands. Based on this I started writing short fragments, I tried to describe the hands and their role and actions during the making, this resulted in a series of text as well as a small selection of images. These texts have different tones, some more intuitive and others more objective in tone. Afterwards, I collected these texts in a long horizontal book, of which every page was cut up in three segments, and bound with a wire binding. In the process, I wanted to bring a physicality, which is described in the text, in a more direct way into the work, so I made a carpet using finger knitting, on which one can read the publication.
This work came out of a series of small assignments and during editorial class, which was focused on writing and editing. We practiced writing with diverse approaches, and it was a good opportunity to work with text as a medium. I learned from this work how to make a publication from beginning to end, so besides making the content I also had to think about the way of binding and design which would also show the concept of the text.
