Pien's work consists of room-filling inflatables, ceramic sculptures and textiles and paintings. Pien Overing works with textile techniques; silkscreen printing, batik, pleating, sewing/quilting, fabric dyeing, and painting. This is achieved with the aid of self-made tools and templates, working along with the physical limitation of the place where the work is made. Colour and contrast are essential elements of Pien Overing's work. She aims to only work with second-hand materials and deadstock textiles. Overing layers techniques and formats. Time and visual representation of data, like numbers and graphs are important in Overing's work. She uses patterns and prints like plaid, checks, polka dots, bitmap, and numbers, contemporary versions of Trompe-l'œil. In one of her recent works, fake painted on painters tape manipulates the final image, presenting the painting in a permanently unfinished state. She intended to make the visitor aware of the process of making it, the mistakes that are made and the time spent making it. Currently, Pien Overing's work challenges the 'undecidable' in textile art by combining textile techniques with painting and making paintings about textile techniques.
