Thesis: The Publicity Of Domestic Space & Illusions Of Intimacy
‘Domestic Portraits’ speculates on new forms of self-representation evolving from the public sharing and staging of private life online. Living spaces increasingly serve as backdrops meant to complement the performance of self rather than stand as an independent entity, transforming the home into a symbolic extension of identity and reducing its interior to signifiers.
Domestic space is undergoing a fundamental shift from physical to virtual staging, enabling individuals to showcase their possessions and identity without the constraints of authenticity or realism. As a result, the domestic space functions more like an interchangeable background, facilitating rapid adaptability of identity expression and illusions of intimacy.
These domestic portraits reflect a broader cultural shift towards self-representation as the highest ideal in art and media consumption in contemporary society. By placing the viewer inside of them, the webcam-picture-frame also becomes emblematic of this cultural shift.
