Caitlyn van der Kaap
Caitlyn van der Kaap is an art historian working as assistant-curator at ROZENSTRAAT - a rose is a rose is a rose (ROZENSTRAAT) and as a researcher for the Performing the Archive & Exhibition project - a collaboration between ROZENSTRAAT - a rose is a rose is a rose, LI-MA, and Stedelijk Museum Breda - focused on opening up the Moniek Toebosch archive for future research, presentation and new artistic engagement.
Gaby Wijers provides a brief introduction, presenting LI-MA as an institution that specifically addresses the core issue of the project: how to breathe new life into ephemeral art that is difficult to archive. This takes place within the *UNFOLD* program series, which has previously featured artists such as Dan Graham and Nan Hoover. She explains the significance of these projects, noting how they break away from the rigid frameworks of art-historical research and employ speculation to examine the complex concept of time more deeply.
Willem van Weelden is DOGtime lecturer, organizer of the lecture and the director of a re-enactment project based on a work by Moniek Toebosch: ‘Painthouse’. The project is being carried out by the students from DOGtime 2a &2b. In all likelihood, it will be part of the 2027 Holland Festival.
EN: Moniek Toebosch and the Art of Escape
Moniek Toebosch was a Dutch actress, visual artist, performance artist, and teacher. (1948-2012)
In this lecture we look at Moniek Toebosch as a pioneer of an alternative art practice. Her versatility and elusiveness undermine art history's tendency to order and name everything. In doing so, she forces us to look beyond the artwork itself: to the place, the moment, the audience, and to the question of what art actually is when it refuses to be pinned down.
How do you archive and open up the work of an artist who spent her entire life trying not to fit into any category?
Moniek Toebosch used every medium that presented itself, preferably several at once. She performed at De Appel and the Stedelijk Museum, but just as readily at Carré and in places that had nothing to do with art. Time and again she pushed the boundaries of those places, to break expectations and to surprise or provoke her audience.
She did so not from a theory or a critical manifesto against the art institution. Her driving force was playfulness, a kind of cheerful anarchism.
The project Performing the Archive delves into her legacy and runs into a paradox. Her work thrived on the context in which it took place: this audience, this place, that moment. How do you bring something like that back to life in an entirely different time and setting?
For anyone who wonders how, as an artist, you can keep moving freely, and what archiving and activating can add to a body of work.
