Lecture #1 – Silvia Gatti
In her lecture Silvia will explore themes of embodiment, memories, storytelling, generative system and their profound interconnection with the notions of body and nature. Rooted in personal experience, her works and installations unfold as architectural and sonic experiences, spaces from where physical and poetical resilience can show its transformative power.
Practise:
The body of my work is mainly centred on the exploration of bodily and digital language and their combined effects on reality.
In my art practise, I’m constantly learning from the experience of being a human: dealing with the tragicomic concept of the “self” and with the limitations of our body. Ultimately I’ve found in language and poetry the way to overcome them. I often work on human scale drawings as cartographic reenactment of body sensations and I combine them with text based video installations where words, poetry, digital artefacts and sounds respond and interact with each other.
I’m fascinated by the interconnection between human and machine logic and how the process of creation has to do, in both cases, with a language that deals with time and repetition. Read more at: www.rijksakademie.nl/en/alumni/silvia-gatti, www.silviagatti.com
About:
Silvia Gatti (1983, Alessandria, Italy, lives and works in Amsterdam) is a DOGtime alumna. She is a contemporary artist whose interdisciplinary practice incorporates elements from architecture, poetry, installations and conceptual works on paper.
From 2023 to 2025 she was a resident at the Rijksakademie van Beeldende Kunsten in Amsterdam.
She has held two solo exhibitions at Andriesse Eyck Galerie, "The Cosmocomic World of Nonsense" (2022) and "Briefly Humans" (2025), and has participated in several art fairs, including multiple editions of Art Rotterdam, Artissima in Turin, and Art Island in IJmuiden.
She graduated cum laude from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie (DOGtime) in 2021, after earning an MA in Architecture, Design, and Urban Planning from the University of Architecture in Genoa, Italy. Her final thesis, Enter, Esc. Please., was nominated for the Gerrit Rietveld Thesis Prize in 2021. In 2019, Silvia won First Prize in the #LassnigByMe Contest, organized by the Stedelijk Museum in Amsterdam, with her series of drawings On Placebo Effect.

The Art of Being
In the lecture series The Art of Being, artists and makers take centre stage as mediators between the self, the other, culture, technology, and nature.
Through their thinking, work, and actions, they speculate on realities in which these domains exist in alternative relations to one another.
Cultural consensus determines where nature ends and culture begins, what rights are granted to nature, where the individual ends and the other begins, and even whether artificial intelligence is truly “intelligent.” Answers to such questions cannot be empirically proven; they are assumptions that constitute a basic culturally relative ontology.
The long history of repression and censorship of art provides proof of the importance of art as a consequential, poetic, ontological force.
For the self-awareness and expressive power of art, it is essential that it recognizes itself as such. This does not stand in opposition to the idea of freedom in art; on the contrary, it underlines its necessity.
The theme of the DOGtime lecture series The Art of Being relates to this theme. At the center of the lectures are primarily artists and makers who engage with the politics of assumed relationships between the self, the other, culture, technology, and nature, and who, through their thinking, work, and actions, redefine these domains, resulting in a ‘new,’ ‘alternative’ ontological ‘space.’
