Life After Rietveld and Sandberg: Legal Life (Visas After Graduation)
The session on Thursday 27 March was hosted by Francisca Khamis Giacoman (non-EU alum and coordinator lumbung practice at Sandberg Instituut). Please send an email to public@rietveldacademie.nl to receive the recording of this session.
We started with a talk by Susanne Mooij, immigration lawyer, followed by a conversation with Francisca Khamis Giacoman and an open Q&A.
During this session you could learn more about obtaining a work and residence permit as an artist or designer in the Netherlands after graduating from Sandberg or Rietveld. The discussion covered key topics related to legal residence for artists, including:
- What is an orientation (or job-seeking) year after graduation?
- How can you obtain a residence permit that allows you to work in the Netherlands as a self-employed artist or performer?
- What must be demonstrated to prove that your work serves ‘essential Dutch cultural interests’?
- Who is eligible for a combined residence- and work permit in the creative industries?
- What are special rules for specific nationalities?

Life After Rietveld and Sandberg
Together with the departments, Rietveld and Sandberg organised a series of monthly sessions to prepare students and recent graduates for professional practice after their studies. By inviting both experts and alums, the series aimed to give participants a clearer idea of what professional practice they aspire to and what their first steps will be after graduation. The programme was open to Rietveld and Sandberg students as well as alums who have recently (less than 5 years) graduated.
This series is initiated and organised by Public & Projects Rietveld Sandberg.
