Being Romantic, Dying Symbolic
Through the Lebensreform movement of the 1920s and 1930s, sunlight as a marker of vitality, purity, and beauty became rein-forced. A projection that formed part of the ground from which fascist ideology drew in constructing a bodily form that exists through the constant proof of determination and strength.
In my installation the body appears as both a mechanism and product of projection. It explores the effort and paradox that emerge in the attempt to maintain an ideal form. The cuts in the modified garments open up the material and create carefully constructed shadows, treating light and shadow as materials that can be shaped rather than a "natural" condition.
Alongside the installation, which is lit by a steady artificial light source, interventions take place outside, unstable in their dependence on weather conditions. The choreography is a continuous process of directing the body toward the sun, holding and posing. The performer repeatedly attempts to position the body in ways that allow the images to become readable and must lose them in order to reach the next.

The interventions take place outdoor, around the campus.
