Marble eggs not meant to be eaten, walking on dried and stretched skin, another animal’s shoes on the wall – entirely ordinary things when I was a child.

 

This work is a story about where things belong, how clean they really are and the intrusive voice present in the hyper-aware arrangement of a home. Combining materials intended to clean human bodies with objects removed from other animals, I question the ways in which we learn how things are supposed to be. My interest lies in how cleanliness influences the moral value assigned to objects and bodies in domestic settings. Fascinated by the idea that ‘dirt is matter out of place’ (Mary Douglas), I have experimented with material, form and placement to allow estrangement from both object and material to emerge.
