Thesis: A place Beyond Nothing & Other Stories
“The Belgian Oracle” is a post-modern folklore performance by Bel McLaughlin and Lau Vander Mijnsbrugge. Using traditional storytelling - singing, narrating, and dancing - the performance tells the story of a young prince who loses his mouth. The work weaves together folklore, queer fiction, and clowning, creating a performance that is as silly as it is rebellious. (Accessible for children.)
“We’re Only Passing Through” is a polyphonic audio work featuring Inka Hilsenbech, Risa Horn, Bel McLaughlin, Siw Ulrikke Maibom, and Cameron Lynch. Presented in the elevator of the Rietveld Building, the piece explores the idea of transitioning.
"Godspeed" is a mural depicting the word in stylized script, drawn in colorful pencil dots. The phrase, traditionally a blessing for a journey, here refers to the passage of time, growth, and queer existence.
"Music box (In the Face of Daylight)" is an installation activated by spinning the handle of the box. As a traditional instrument often used in folklore, the music box honors music-making and singing as acts of collectivity and knowledge transmission. The sculpture blends camp aesthetics with folklore.
