Thesis: Agency and Victimhood in the Commodification of Appearance
Dos Fiestas, Tres Bailes
is an immersive, subjective attempt to understand (some of) the ways individuals embedded within beauty economies navigate the intricate negotiations—both internal and external—that arise across these dynamics.
Traditionally polarizing public opinion—and more recently labeled as a potentially empowering disruption of patriarchal structures—these dynamics reveal extremely nuanced experiences and porous narratives.
In these individual stories, we find oscillation instead of polarization, superpositions and dualities, odd pairings and confronting realities.
Neither objectified victims nor empowered agents, the focus of this open-ended project is to build bridges of understanding within the obscured and conflictive—yet profoundly humane—world of beauty as a commodity.
