Thesis: The Presence in Absence

Desmond Maycare is an artist, photographer and director working with disconnect, particularly in relation to the connection between the body and mind. Other key themes in his work revolve around seclusion, paranoia, individualism, surrealism, masculinity, Crip identity and non-conformity. He explores these themes through a lens shaped by everyday life, presented in ways that challenge our sense of reality. His Graduation show consists of a film installation and photography.

The Middle, short film/installation
The Middle explores the disconnect between our physical bodies and our minds. This relates to the philosophy of Maurice Merleau-Ponty, which contains the idea, that the human body is not just a physical object, but also a fundamental part of how we experience the world. Individualism and a certain disconnect are very present in society. This reality can be experienced as absurd, like a surreal dream. The Middle represents an alternative dimension, a surreal environment that questions our reality.
