With the film RAKI SOFRASI, Nisan explores her and Arda, Maya and Hasan’s feelings about the troubled political situation in Turkey. Looking at it from the distance and comfort of their “chosen home”, the Netherlands, they give voice to separation, resilience and tenderness in the reoccurring rakı tables.

 

RAKI SOFRASI was filmed through the year 2023, during the upcoming election turmoil, the devastating earthquake happened in southeast Turkey. The way the Turkish government treated the region and its people were maddening to witness. The group talks through the grief and anxiety they feel for themselves and their country. Eventually the rakı table digests these feelings and shows the political is deeply personal.
