Marjoleine Timmer is an interdisciplinary artist. Her practice is shaped by themes as womanhood, invisible disabilities and the roles and masks we put on and that are forced on us by society.
She graduated with a multimedia installation, 'Iteration #1', and a dress-sculpture, 'You See I'll Be'.

Marjoleine Timmer is een interdisciplinair kunstenaar. Haar werk wordt gevormd door thema's als vrouw-zijn, onzichtbare beperkingen en de rollen en maskers die we aannemen en die ons door de samenleving worden opgelegd.
Ze studeerde af met een multimedia-installatie, 'Iteration #1', en een jurk-sculptuur, 'You See I'll Be'.
We zijn allemaal ruimtelijk
en in een voortdurende dialoog
met de lichamen en omgevingen
om ons heen.
We vormen en hervormen elkaar.
Verandering voltrekt zich langzaam en vaak met wrijving,
maar door experiment en volharding

Taking up space is a negotiation shaped not only by physical interaction, but also by social constructs, power dynamics, and internalised expectations - a dynamic that theorists like Young, Butler and Bordo connect to how women are conditioned to occupy less space, and discipline themselves according to imposed roles and stereotypes. This research investigates the roles and masks women adopt to cope with these limitations, using literature, personal narrative, and performative fieldwork to explore how those roles might be transformed to create more room for movement, both physical and metaphorical.

Het innemen van ruimte is een onderhandelingsproces dat niet alleen wordt gevormd door fysieke interactie, maar ook door sociale constructies, machtsdynamieken en geïnternaliseerde verwachtingen. Theoretici als Young, Butler en Bordo brengen deze dynamiek in verband met de wijze waarop vrouwen worden geconditioneerd om minder ruimte in te nemen en zichzelf te disciplineren volgens opgelegde rollen en stereotypen. Dit onderzoek bestudeert de rollen en maskers die vrouwen aannemen om met deze beperkingen om te gaan; aan de hand van literatuur, persoonlijke verhalen en performatief veldwerk wordt onderzocht hoe deze rollen kunnen worden getransformeerd om meer bewegingsruimte te creëren – zowel in fysieke als in metaforische zin.
