Amsterdam, Netherlands
This satellite session will take the form of a panel conversation, bringing together representatives from three art and arts education initiatives from Soweto (South Africa), Lubumbashi (DRC), and Goma (DRC) for a conversation on the transformative role of the arts in their respective contexts.
The panel will offer a platform for the participating initiatives to share the histories, practices, experiences, and challenges, while reflecting on the following questions:
-
How can art contribute to individual and collective transformation?
-
In what ways can artistic and educational practices foster community building?
-
How do colonial histories continue to shape the present, and what role can art and transnational collaboration play in challenging these structures?
-
How can the arts empower communities to imagine, shape, and sustain more just futures?
Following the presentations, the moderator will lead a conversation with the panellists before opening the discussion to the audience. The session aims to bring together practitioners, educators, cultural workers, and other professionals engaged in or collaborating with community-based arts initiatives, creating opportunities for dialogue, exchange, and the development of new connections.
