On Thursday 27 February, there were two successive sessions.
There were presentations by Amsterdams Fonds voor de Kunst, Mondriaan Fonds, Stimulerings Fonds, Voordekunst and het Cultuurfonds about Dutch funding opportunities. Followed by a panel talk, moderated by Márk Redele (alum Sandberg and Coordinator Sandberg Research).
This was followed by a session hosted by Pedro Matias (alum Rietveld and Sandberg) with Sanne van Balen (alum Rietveld) and Márk Redele.
During this session Pedro Matias, Sanne van Balen and Márk Redele will each present their own experiences with applying for various Dutch grants. Afterwards they further unpacked in conversation with each other how to navigate the Dutch funding system and offer insights and anecdotes about the application process.
Pedro Matias
Pedro Matias (they/them - he/his) holds an MFA from Sandberg Institute, a BFA from the Gerrit Rietveld Academie and a MA in Philosophy from the New University of Lisbon. Pedro is a transmedia artist and researcher exploring new flows of alternative knowledge and ways of being, in the intersectional space of audio-visuals, materiality, performativity and critical thought. Since 2020 Pedro is co-developing a collaborative artist-run research network - Iridescent Institute of Desire. Pedro’s individual and collaborative practices have received several Dutch grants and were exhibited internationally. For the past years, Pedro has given workshops on grant applications at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie, Salwa Foundation & ThisWorks Foundation.
Sanne van Balen
Sanne van Balen studied Dutch literature at UvA and Image & Language at the Gerrit Rietveld Academie. She creates linguistic installations, a novel, paintings, and sculptures. In her bright and saturated practice, she tries to connect language and landscape by approaching them as linguistic places of meaning. She made installations for Land-art Flevoland, Arcadia, Kunstenfestival Watou, Nieuw Dakota Amsterdam and more. Sanne regularly writes for Hard//Hoofd and MetropolisM. In 2023 she received ‘Artist Start’ from the Mondriaan Fund and in 2025 she is part of Oerol, Woest & Bijster for which she received funding from the Dutch foundation for literature and Amarte.
Márk Redele
Márk Redele, graduate from the Sandberg Instituut, is a visual artist primarily interested in cultivating an intimate relationship with materials and exploring their capacities to summon collective stories and sensitivities. Drawn to their ability to shift between radically different realms and disciplines, Mark’s work investigates material attitudes and their agency-forming potential in imagining and interrogating non-dominant sensitivities and narratives. Mark engages with materials as the main characters and protagonists of stories - personal and public, factual and fictive. They have realized and exhibited works internationally and organize research and education at the Sandberg Instituut.
Life After Rietveld and Sandberg
Together with the departments, Rietveld and Sandberg organise a series of monthly sessions to prepare students and recent graduates for professional practice after their studies. By inviting both experts and alums, the series aims to give participants a clearer idea of what professional practice they aspire to and what their first steps will be after graduation.
The programme is open to Rietveld and Sandberg students as well as alums who have recently (less than 5 years ago) graduated.
The monthly programme starts at 17.15 and is followed by a communal meal prepared by the Rietveld Canteen to discuss the topic further and connect with each other. (Note: participants pay for their own meal (€7,25 max), we pay for a drink).
We hope to see you there!
The session will be held in English at the Stairs in the FedLev Building. The space is accessible for wheelchair users.
