My work examines the systems that organize early life, the rules that govern these systems and the many possible positions we take when learning to interact with such systems. I am curious about formative experiences that shape us, and have shaped what came before us. These foundational experiences seem to have a direct impact on how we process the world later. I recognize this pattern in many facets of life, from the complexity of geo-political landscape, to the unwritten, unspoken codes of conduct embedded in our daily social interactions, and finally in the privacy of our domestic realm. In my current body of work I am taking the game or the arena of play as a starting point. All games have a set of rules, in my work the game operates as a way to think through the determinism I detect in most encounters, with myself as well as with others. I am currently working with various materials such as ceramics, paper, glass and textile. I select materials that embody the passing of time. This appears in the work in various ways, but simply put, either the materials are actually old or I have worked them to appear aged in some aspect. The way they are crafted as well as the color pallet also reflects this bygone era that I think is still very present. Through my material choices and treatment of these materials I aim to offer a sort of collapse of time, one that might allow for a clearer view of what came before.
