"11 Prom King draws from a lived high school experience, where the pinnacle of male identity was participation in team sports, which came with a clear aesthetic and set of mannerisms. I romanticized these as a tool for belonging, and in this project I claim them as my own.

Queer identity is often positioned in relation to gender norms, whether through conformity, resistance, or subversion. I’m interested in people who seem to fit comfortably within these norms but undermine the assumptions that come with them.

Appropriating traditional gender codes as a form of resistance against expectations of queer identity creates confusion. The works in the exhibition emerge from this tension, and from the excitement of becoming difficult to read. "
