Thesis: Magical Realism in Cinema - Exploring Temporal Concepts in Magical Realism Through Andrei Tarkovsky’s Mirror
Exegi Monumentum is a hybrid road movie exploring the tension between poetic ambition and lived experience. Structured as a journey, the film doesn’t follow a road. It is the road, constantly shifting form as it travels through actual locations and the filmmaker’s inner thoughts.
At its heart is a personal quest: the filmmaker sets out to climb Mont Blanc to recite a 19th-century Polish poem written by Juliusz Słowacki, chasing a desire for grandeur, permanence, and meaning.
What begins as an attempt to perform something truly epic gradually transforms into a reflection on the impossibility and the absurd beauty of translating poetic ideals into reality.
Thus, Exegi Monumentum confronts the mythological origins of the heroic gesture. Its emphasis lies on the struggle to make art that matters, and the realisation that sometimes the most genuine work is the attempt that fails gloriously, while reaching for the sublime.
