Rietveld Academie Fashion Show 2021

Friday 25 June and Saturday 26 June

The Rietveld Academie Fashion Show is the annual presentation of the fashion department of Amsterdam’s Gerrit Rietveld Academie. This year, the fashion department continues its experimentation with alternative presentation forms that fit the various graduation projects by individual students.

For 2021, the department is showcasing the latest class of new design graduates with a multidisciplinary group show on location, for which visitors can reserve a time slot of 45 minutes. In small groups, visitors can get to know the designers and their various projects in an intimate way. The audience becomes part of the whole through a series of performative elements and interactions, participation and conversation.

The Rietveld Academie Fashion Show 2021 presents the graduation projects of Bonnie Ogylvie, Chiara Frenzel, Emilia Christina Honnebier, Emma Lou Burkel, Karly Gerharts (limo hair), Malgorzata (Gosha) Woch, Millie Honnebier, Riun Jo and Roxane Mbanga. Each has a personal approach to fashion as a form of expression that can be described as ‘related to’: related to textile crafts and traditions, to the body, to identity, to representation and visual culture, to memories and sentiment, and to well-being.

Niels Klavers, Head of the Fashion Department, says: “For the second year running, our students had to study and graduate under the challenging circumstances of the Covid-19 pandemic. Its impact has not escaped us. However, notable changes in attitudes and ambitions, and evolving ideas about our education, were already convincing enough for us to embark on an experimental journey before we were forced to a halt by this virus. Today we see the first results of these changes, that will hopefully lead to new practices to enrich the way we position ‘fashion’ in culture.”

For the realisation of this final presentation, the department collaborated with curator Eduardo Leon, a Rietveld alumnus of the graphic design department, who also operates in the fashion domain and regularly gives workshops and guest lectures at the academy. During their graduation year, the students followed masterclasses in, among other things, scenography and curatorial practice, production and branding, and worked closely with set, light and sound designers. For communications, each year the department works with a new group of graduating students from the graphic design department of the Rietveld Academie. Together with creative professionals and teachers, the students look for new ways to present their work to the public, allowing greater attention to their individual approaches to the discipline.

The location of the Rietveld Academie Fashion Show this year is the project space Pre-Reserved at the Tt. Vasumweg 119 in Amsterdam Noord. The location is easily accessible by ferry from Central Station to NDSM-werf.

When booking a time slot, please keep the following in mind: the presentation will take place on the first floor of the location and it is only accessible by stairs.
