What are the qualities of public space in our contemporary cities? What are the social and cultural criteria to re-evaluate it and to transform it into a “Common Space”?

A “cultural change of paradigms” for urbanity is under way. A crucial shift is marked by a breach with a Fordist conception of the city that is based on industrial production, traffic and capitalism. The “new urbanism”, by contrast, (re)discovers the city as a space for living and culture. On the occasion of the “Stadsgesprek: Building Common Spaces” architects, artist and urban researchers form Amsterdam and Cologne will engage in a public discussion on the potential of artistc media in the site-specific redesign of the public domain by drawing on recent developments in Amsterdam especially on the Zeeburgereiland.

The Stadsgesprek takes place at the occasion of the interdisciplinary art and research project [re/dis]cover. The international programme builds a bridge in between two cities, Amsterdam and Cologne. We embark on an explorative journey to discover and recover public space and its various art forms. During our three-week presence in Amsterdam we launch the TRANSURBAN Urban Art Archive. This rich programme invites the public to engage in discussions, explore Amsterdam´s public art and to learn more about its past and present.
